Serena Bhela, MD

Dr. Serena Bhela, a Bay Area native, joined Diablo Nephrology in February 2020.  She obtained her medical degree at St. George’s University in 2013. She then moved to New York and underwent her Internal Medicine training at the New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn. Thereafter, she completed her fellowship in Nephrology at the State University of New York Downstate where she served as Chief Fellow and developed her interest in teaching. She has since returned home to the East Bay.

Dr. Bhela is board certified in both Nephrology and Internal Medicine. She is an active member of the American Society of Nephrology, American Medical Association and American College of Physicians. Her personal hobbies include cooking, hiking and traveling.

She will be seeing patients in our Concord location.

May Chiu, MD

Dr. May Chiu joined Diablo Nephrology in 1998.  She attended Albany Medical College in New York, and trained in internal medicine at Oregon Health Science University.  Thereafter, she completed a fellowship in nephrology at the University of Chicago with special training in transplant nephrology, kidney stones, and kidney disease during pregnancy.  She served on the faculty at the University of Chicago before joining Diablo Nephrology. 

Dr. Chiu is board certified in both nephrology and internal medicine.  She is the Chief of Nephrology at John Muir Hospital - Concord Campus and serves on several hospital committees, as well as being the medical director of the Fresenius Brentwood hemodialysis unit and medical director of the Acute Dialysis Services at the John Muir Medical Center.  In addition, she is a member of The National Kidney Foundation, American Society of Nephrology, and American Society of Transplant.

Dr. Chiu sees patients in our Concord office.  She is fluent in Mandarin and Taiwanese.   

Mario Curzi, MD

Dr. Mario Curzi is a Bay Area native; born in Oakland and a UC Berkeley graduate.  He attended medical school at Vanderbilt University and continued his internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship there.

Dr. Curzi served as faculty at Vanderbilt University before joining Diablo Nephrology in 1985.  He is well versed in all aspects of kidney care including end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and dialysis management, such as home therapies including peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis.  He is active in the hospital management of acute kidney injury, hypertension, fluid and electrolyte imbalances, and pre- and post-renal transplant care.  In addition, Dr. Curzi is one of three interventional nephrologists with Diablo Nephrology.

Dr. Curzi has been involved in numerous clinical research studies in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and dialysis over the years.  He has a special interest in CKD care of non-dialysis patients for the diagnosis and prevention of CKD progression.  He is medical director of the home therapies program, as well as the Fresenius Walnut Creek hemodialysis unit.  

He sees patients in our Walnut Creek office.

Doris Galina-Da Silva, MD

Dr. Galina-Da Silva obtained her medical degree at the University of Panama.  She then moved to the United States and completed her internal medicine residency at the John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County in Chicago, IL. She joined Diablo Nephrology in 2014 after completing her nephrology fellowship at the University of Alabama, Birmingham.  Dr. Galina is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology. 

Her main interests are acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, and glomerular diseases.  Dr. Galina is knowledgeable in home dialysis modalities.  She enjoys teaching resident physicians in a clinical hospital setting.  In her spare time she enjoys outdoor activities and CrossFit.  She sees patients in our Antioch and Concord offices and is fluent in Spanish. 

Chenyin He, MD

Dr. Chenyin He joined Diablo Nephrology in 2012. She is a graduate of UC Berkeley with a degree in molecular and cell biology. Dr. He attended medical school at the University of Utah and completed her internal medicine residency at the University of Texas Southwestern/Parkland Memorial Hospital, where she also served as an assistant professor. She returned home to the Bay Area and completed her nephrology fellowship at UCSF.    

Dr. He is board certified in nephrology and internal medicine.  Dedicated to patient care, Dr. He enjoys seeing patients in our Walnut Creek and Antioch offices.  She is fluent in Mandarin.

Edward Kim, MD, MPH, MHS

Dr. Edward Kim joined Diablo Nephrology in 2007 after completing his nephrology fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.  He received the Osler Teaching Award for Outstanding Teaching by a Fellow at Johns Hopkins University and was nominated for the String of Pearls teaching award during his internal medicine residency at Georgetown University Hospital.

Dr. Kim also received his Master of Public Health at Tulane University School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine and worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) before returning home and earning his medical degree at the University of Hawaii.  His interest in public health and preventive medicine continued throughout his career, as he earned a Master of Health Science in cardiovascular epidemiology at the Bloomberg School of Public Health concurrent to his nephrology fellowship.  Dr. Kim bases his medical care on the principles of his public health background to establish a strong, reciprocal doctor/patient relationship.

Dr. Kim is board certified in nephrology.  He is also the webmaster for this rudimentary website.

Dr. Kim see patients in our Walnut Creek and Antioch office, and is medical director of Fresenius San Miguel Dialysis Unit.

Jason Law, MD

Originally from Los Angeles, California, Dr. Jason Law is a graduate of the University of California, San Diego with a degree in Biology/Immunology.  He went on to receive his medical degree at Saint Louis University School of Medicine.  Dr. Law then underwent internal medicine training at the New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell before moving back to California and completing his nephrology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco.   Dr. Law joined Diablo Nephrology in August of 2019.

Dr. Law is board certified in both nephrology and internal medicine.  He is a member of the American Society of Nephrology.  He sees patients in both our Concord and Walnut Creek offices.

Neha Nainani, MD

Dr. Neha Nainani joined Diablo Nephrology in January of 2018.  She obtained her medical degree at Topiwala National Medical College in Mumbai, India in 2004.  She then moved to the United States and attended the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, Texas and received a Master of Public Health.  Dr. Nainani underwent internal medicine training at the State University of New York where she also completed her nephrology fellowship before moving to California in 2012.

Dr.Nainani is board certified in both nephrology and internal medicine. 

She is a member of the American College of Physicians, American Medical Association as well and the American Society of Nephrology.  She sees patients in our Antioch office and is fluent in Hindi.

Rohit Sharma, MD

Dr. Rohit Sharma joined Diablo Nephrology in 1998.  He is board certified in nephrology, interventional nephrology, and internal medicine.

Dr. Sharma is President of Diablo Nephrology.  He serves as medical director at the Fresenius West Antioch Dialysis Unit, as well as the Diablo Dialysis Access Center.  He sees patients in our Concord office.

Jason Shey, MD

Dr. Jason Shey joined Diablo Nephrology in 2002.  He graduated from Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) in 1997 and completed his internal medicine residency at the BCM-Affiliated Hospitals in 2000 in Houston, Texas.  He moved to Dallas and completed his nephrology fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern.

Dr. Shey is board certified in nephrology and internal medicine.  Dr. Shey serves as the medical director of the Fresenius Pittsburg hemodialysis unit.  He is a member of the American Society of Nephrology. 

Dr. Shey sees patients in our Concord and Antioch offices.  He is fluent in Mandarin and Taiwanese.

Zita Shiue, MD

Originally from Bakersfield, California, Dr. Zita Shiue is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in biological basis of behavior and economics.  She went on to receive her medical degree at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  Dr. Shiue underwent internal medicine training at the University of Washington, where she also completed her nephrology fellowship prior to returning to California to join Diablo Nephrology in 2014. 

In addition to her strong dedication to patient care, her interests include health care quality and safety and working with the underserved. 

Dr. Shiue is an avid sports fan and enjoys hiking and the outdoors. 

Dr. Shiue sees patients at the Walnut Creek and Antioch office, and is the medical director of the Fresenius Concord.  Dr. Shiue is fluent in Mandarin.

Aziz Valika, MD

Dr. Aziz Valika originally hails from Chicago, IL, where he completed his medical school training and residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Illinois at Chicago.  He then completed his fellowship in nephrology at Yale University in New Haven, CT, and worked there as full time faculty, before joining a private practice in Chicago.  After several years spent training in interventional nephrology, participating in research trials, and continuing to teach medical students, he moved with his family to the Bay area in 2022, where he joined the West Coast Kidney Institute.

Dr. Valika enjoys all aspects of nephrology.  He is interested in preventive care, aggressive management of chronic conditions, and helping to diagnose and treat rare and unusual kidney diseases.  He enjoys spending time with his patients and listening to their stories.  

Dr. Valika currently sees patients in our Concord and Antioch clinic, and oversees dialysis patients in Antioch and Brentwood.  He rounds at John Muir and Sutter hospitals seeing patients with kidney disease.

Elizabeth Wrone, MD, MS

Dr. Elizabeth Wrone has been with Diablo Nephrology since 2002.  She earned her medical degree at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and was trained in internal medicine at Yale University.  She completed a fellowship in Nephrology and Hypertension and a Masters of Science degree in epidemiology at Stanford University.

Dr. Wrone is board certified in internal medicine as well as nephrology and hypertension.  She has been a Chairperson of the Medical Advisory Board of The National Kidney Foundation since 2007 and is a member of the American Society of Nephrology and Council on Kidney in Cardiovascular Disease of the American Heart Association.  She is presently the Chief of Nephrology at the John Muir Medical Center - Walnut Creek Campus, as well as the medical director of the Fresenius East Antioch hemodialysis unit. Dr. Wrone is also the physician supervisor of our Nurse Practitioner Program.  

Dr. Wrone is an avid music fan and enjoys playing bluegrass fiddle and violin in her spare time.

Dr. Wrone sees patients in our Walnut Creek and Antioch offices.

Elizabeth Chacon, NP

Elizabeth Chacon, MSN, FNP-C is a board-certified nurse practitioner who joined Diablo Nephrology in June 2021.  She earned her BSN at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and her MSN at Georgetown University, with a specialization as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the American Nephrology Nurses Association.

Melissa Clark, NP

Melissa Clark, MSN, AGNP-C is board-certified nurse practitioner who joined Diablo Nephrology in November 2018.  She received her BSN at Jacksonville University in Florida and her MSN from South University in Georgia with a specialization in Adult Gerontology.  

She is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

Ra'shida Petrovich, NP

Ra’shida Petrovich, RN, MSN, ACNP is a board-certified nurse practitioner from Oakland, CA who joined Diablo Nephrology in October 2011.  She received her undergraduate degree in African American Studies and Social Welfare at UC Berkeley.  Ms. Petrovich went on to pursue her Master’s in Nursing at UCSF and graduated from the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program in June 2011.  She worked as a kidney, pancreas, liver transplant nurse at UCSF before becoming a nurse practitioner

Helen Kalasa Mwanza, NP

Helen Kalasa Mwanza holds a Master of Science Degree in Nursing. Prior to joining West Coast Kidney Institute she worked as a Nurse Practitioner with East Bay Nephrology Medical Group for four years where her key responsibilities included care for patients with Acute renal failure, and End Stage Renal Disease out patient clinic. She worked in determining and implementing plan of care in collaboration with other disciplinary teams.

She has been working in Health Care sector for the last 20 years.

She is avid about her work with kidney patients, and strives to work with other care providers team members to ensure quality care for all Kidney patients.

Lynde Rouche, PA

Lynde Rouche, PA-C is a board-certified physician assistant who joined Diablo Nephrology in 2018.  She graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Biology and Psychology.  Lynde then furthered her education at Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, receiving her degree as a Physician Assistant in 2001.

Theresa Runyon, NP

Theresa Runyon, MSN, RN, FNP-BC, CNN is a board certified nurse practitioner who has been with Diablo Nephrology since 2004.  She received her BSN and MSN at Samuel Merritt College in Oakland, CA.  

Prior to pursuing a career in nephrology, Ms. Runyon worked as an RN, BSN in the Emergency Department at John Muir Medical Center, Concord Campus for thirteen years.  She is a member of the American Nephrology Nurses Association and the California Association of Nurse Practitioners.
